The chasuble is the principal vestment of the celebrant at the Eucharist, worn over the alb and stole. Its Latin name, casula — "little house" — recalls the ample conical garment of the early Church, which fell on every side and had to be gathered up at the arms.
Colour and season
The chasuble takes the colour of the day, marking the liturgical season or feast: green in Ordinary Time, violet in Advent and Lent, white at the great festivals, and red for martyrs and Pentecost.
